Sheffield Wednesday Ladies returned to action last
week at the Jubilee Sports and Social Club Ground with
a derby against Sheffield United Community.
It was their first match back at the SWFC
Community Programme facility since vandalism to the
pitch following its opening several weeks ago.
Though they were unable to mark the occasion
with a win, the youthful Wednesday side gave a spirited
account of themselves against slightly more
experienced opponents.
Jasmin Wisher scored Wednesday’s goal in a 3-1
defeat. Former Wednesday player Shannon Coughlan
opened the scoring, while another ex-Owl and also
United’s captain Charlotte Howe netted the only goal of the second half. Paige Wainwright’s
looping header gave United a 2-1 interval lead.
Wednesday remain bottom of the North East Regional Women’s League Southern
Division table with 7 points in the bag and with just three games left. United’s win lifted them
on to 16 points and with six games still to play have probably already done enough to avoid
relegation.

Gareth Taylor has been named Barclays Women’s Super League Manager of the Month for
March, securing the accolade for the second month in succession.
Manchester City’s Head Coach led his side to a hat-trick of WSL victories over
Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea, extending their unbeaten run in
the league to 14 matches. Scoring seven goals in their three outings and conceding just two,
victory over Emma Hayes’ Chelsea in late March saw the team climb to second in the league
standings at the time, only behind neighbours Manchester United on goal difference.
Taylor meanwhile saw off the challenge of Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall and Aston
Villa’s Carla Ward to scoop the accolade for the second time in as many months.
Speaking about the award, he said: “I’m really pleased to have been successful in this
vote for the second month in a row.
“I think winning it back-to-back shows where we’ve come, the improvements in the team
as well and the run we have been on.
“I’m at the head of it, in the good times and the bad times, but I have to say the players
are the main reason why I’m able to accept these awards, as well as our fantastic team of staff
– it’s a collective effort all round.
“We have five games left and some tough challenges in there, but we are right in amongst
it.
“We need to continue and put together another run similar to what we’ve just done.
Going all the way unbeaten from October to early April is a great effort by everyone but the
challenge never stops, and I think it’s something to look forward to.
“We will just enjoy the run-in and see where it takes us.”
It has been a double celebration for Manchester City as striker Khadija Shaw has been
named Barclays Women’s Super League Player of the Month for March, the second time that
the Jamaican international has won the award this season.
