WAREHAM UNITED REFORMED CHURCH
Making Time for God
We live in a world which seems to demand that we are always
busy. Christianity can be a very busy religion, and we can feel
guilty if we are not on the go, doing something for others. But even
God took a rest from Creation and Jesus took frequent breaks
away from others. Sometimes He even got up so early that the sun
had not risen. It was the only way He could get away to find
stillness and calm away from the crowds, and even his disciples.
Jesus needed time to pray and to be with his heavenly Father, as
we do.
Do we have the ability to take ourselves off for a short time each
day, to be alone with God? Sometimes it's easy, maybe we take a
walk by ourselves, sit in the garden or go to our favourite place.
Other times it's hard won, especially when people come looking for
us. The disciples did not understand Jesus' need for solitude, to
refresh Himself and be with his Father. They came looking for Him
(Mark: 1).
Jesus lived two lives: one life of public preaching and healing and,
supporting this life, was His dependence on the one He called
Abba, Father. His praying was the source of His authority and
power. When we as Christians pray seriously, the presence of
Jesus is promised through the Holy Spirit to guide and encourage
us.
Sitting in silence with God is not doing nothing. We need this
connection. Even if we do not speak, God is with us. Let us
remember Jesus' words about personal prayer in Matthew 6:6
When you are praying, go into your room and shut the door
and pray to your Father who is in secret and your Father, who
sees in secret, will reward you.
Every blessing
Janet
