LM: Buddy Guy. Oh, I just absolutely love Buddy Guy. He is my favourite living – I
love Buddy Guy, and I was on stage at Buddy Guy's nightclub. I was doing a CD release
party, and this is weird. I had put out my fourth
CD for my own label. I have my own label, Blue
Kitty Music, and that's why I write these tunes
with other people and record them. The last
record I put out was 2020. Yeah, I put the
record out and the next week, the entire world
shut down for the pandemic. So the night
before that happened was my CD release party
at Buddy Guy's Legends. And everybody was
like, oh, stay six feet away from Buddy Guy. We
have to protect him. And I walked over to him,
and from six feet away, I said, Buddy, I just love
you. I just absolutely love you. It would be such
an honour to me if you had just felt like coming
up and playing with my band at any point. And
he said, well, it all depends on how much
cognac I drink. And I said, well, you best get drinking then, son, because I want you
on stage with me [chuckles]. And he laughed.
BiTS: Buddy’s got a brand-new album, you know, and I was listening to it a couple
of days ago. He sings like he's 30. Nobody would believe he is 89!
LM: Well, I'll tell you something, in January, I went to this club and watched him and
Bobby Rush. And he and Bobby each did a set and then they did some together. Bobby
Rush is in his 90s and that man is just as juicy and sexy as he ever will be or was. I
mean, it was astonishing that these two guys that are both over 80 years old, put on
one of the hottest shows I've ever seen. So much just raw man [laughs]!
BiTS: Well, absolutely wonderful. Liz, that sounds like a good place to stop. I don't
want to take too much of your time because I know how busy you are. Thank you so
much for putting up with my trying to get in touch with you when you were in
Germany and then this, and thank you so much for talking to me it's been a pleasure.
LM: Well it's been a pleasure for me too Ian. Thank you so much for asking me. I
hope that you have a great rest of the
Liz Mandeville ‘Scratch The Kitty’
year. Maybe someday I'll get over to
play in England and I'll meet you.
BiTS: This is going to be written up
and will be published in Blues in the
South. I'll probably be in touch with
you before then anyway. You look
after yourself. Have a great day.
LM: Thank you so much.
BiTS: All right.
LM: Bye-bye now.
