BiTS: Have you got any plans to go back into the studio?
SF: Yes, we do, but I can’t really talk about that right now, but the short answer is absolutely yes.
BiTS: Good. I’m glad to hear that. Tell me something about the way you go about making records.
Do you tend to go into the studio with everything prepared, or do you make it up as you go along,
kind of thing?
SF: With the last even two albums, but for sure this last album, I usually have myself prepared and
then we record it live off the floor, so everything was done in time together, including vocals and
guitars. All the parts, all the leads, it’s not overdubs on my new album “Pinky’s Blues”. I basically
learn the songs and get prepared and practise and then we just hire really good musicians that can
do that, like Chris Layton from Double Trouble. Chris is amazing. He can play and Jon Penner, our
bass player, we’re all used to playing live and performing in the moment. That’s really important
when you want to capture that spontaneity. The energy, the spontaneity, the vibe, the soul is the
spirit of blues music. It’s really done in the moment and you’re reacting in time to each other.
BiTS: Tell me something about your band at the moment.
SF: My touring band is Jon Penner on bass, who was with me from my very first album, so he’s been
in and out of my band for over 20 years. He’s fantastic and on drums we have Corey Keller who’s a
little younger than us, but he also came up through the Austin, Texas blues scene and he’s a
fantastic drummer and really there’s just three of us on stage.
BiTS: Wonderful. Excellent. One final question: where do you expect to be in say five years’ time?
What are your plans, or perhaps you don’t have long-term plans?
SF: Oh, no. I have long-term plans. I’ve got a few more albums I’m planning to make. I’m working
on a book about women guitar players. I’m finishing a PhD in music, so between now and five
years, I’ll definitely be done with that. I’ve been doing that for almost five years now.
BiTS: That sounds like a wonderful place to stop. Dr Foley, is it [chuckling]?
SF: [Chuckling] Well, it will be. Those are the three things I do, and I do some educating. I do some
teaching on the side and yes, I keep a lot of irons in the fire.
BiTS: Sue, I won’t take any more of your time. It’s been wonderful chatting to you. Thank you very
much indeed for doing this.
SF: Okay, well, thanks very much for having me and hopefully, I’ll see you over there pretty soon.
BiTS: That’s lovely. Thank you very much indeed. Bye.
SF: Okay. Bye.
