MY NEXT MOVE / JOB ZONES
USING THE MY NEXT MOVE WEBSITE
Go to mynextmove org to view the website’s landing page as you read about this career
exploration tool
My Next Move is a website produced by the National Center for O*NET Development and sponsored
by the US Department of Labor/Employment and Training Administration. The website is an interactive
tool that provides information about more than 900 occupations, career exploration activities, and links to
external sites such as the USDOL/ETA’s CareerOneStop centers.
The website’s landing page (the first page you reach) asks, “What do you want to do for a living?” You
can search careers by typing in an occupation name, such as electrician, or you can type in key words such
as computer programming. You can also browse careers by industry, using a pull-down menu to select an
employment sector. If you click the Start button under “Tell us what you’d like to do,” you will reach the
O*NET Interest Profiler. The website is also available in a Spanish version.
To view the information that the website provides about each career, type in an occupation
name in the box under “Search careers with key words” and click Search This will bring you to
a list of occupations Click the one that is the closest match to what you’re looking for, and you
will then reach the website page for that occupation
The website provides comprehensive information about each career. At the top of the web page for an
occupation, you can read a description of what a person does in the career and the key tasks that person
performs. You can also watch a video about the career and open a transcript so you can read along as the
video plays. (The videos present a lot of information very quickly.)
Eight sections on the web page provide the following information for each career:
Knowledge: Relevant subject matter, such as Economics, Fine Arts, or Geography
Skills: Basic skills and social, technical, and other skills
Abilities: Physical strength, coordination, thinking, and other abilities
Personality: Personal qualities
Technology: Computer skills and other technology skills
Education: Training and credentials
Job Outlook: Forecast for future job opportunities and average salaries (state and local information
may be available)
Explore More: Links to careers in the same employment sector or with similar skills
