History of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated ®
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is the first Black Greek lettered
organization established by African-American college educated women. It was
founded on January 15, 1908, at a historically black university, Howard University
in Washington, DC. The Sorority was founded by a group of sixteen outstanding
students on the campus led by Ethel Hedgemon Lyle. Alpha Kappa Alpha was
incorporated on January 29, 1913.
The Sorority has grown to over 355,000 members, 1,061 chapters in 50 United
States or Territories and 11 countries.
For more than 115 years, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sisterhood has been a
dominating force to uplift people in their communities, state, nation, and the world.
We are proud of our renown sisterhood who has always focused on advancement of
Education and Academic Achievement, Social and Political issues, Voting and Voting
Rights, Injustice and Human rights, the Black Dollar and Entrepreneurship, Economic
Development, Domestic and Global issues, Health Care, the Arts, Networking,
Communication Skills, Emerging Leaders, Historically Black Colleges and Universities
(HBCUs), and the like. The members continue to uphold the Sorority's mission to:
"Render Service to All Mankind."
Through the years, we have been led by 30 International presidents. Our current
International President is Mrs. Danette Anthony Reed,
Our International Theme for 2022 - 2026 is: "Soaring to Greater Heights of
Service and Sisterhood." The programs of service that will be implemented during
this administration are: Strengthen Our Sisterhood, Enhance Our Families, Build
Our Economic Wealth, Enhance Our Environment, Advocate for Social Justice and
Uplift Our Local Community.
