History of the Kappa Iota Omega Chapter
The Kappa Iota Omega Chapter was chartered on June 29, 1974 by 17 young ladies
from the Roanoke Valley Area, encompassing Halifax, Northampton, Hertford, and Bertie
Counties. The chapter reigns under the auspices of the governance of the Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
Over the past 49 years, we have served the youth, adults, and senior citizens in our
various communities in every aspect of life – education, health, economics, politics, the
arts, financial management, networking, social justice, family, global and environmental
issues, diversity, and the list continues.
Our chapter has been involved in innumerable programs through the years. Some
include the following: Budding Roses and AKAGents, Academic Mentoring and Tutorial
Programs, Literacy Programs, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
projects, ASCEND Youth Enrichment Program (Achievement, Self-Awareness,
Communication, Engagement, Networking, and Developmental Skills), Economic and
Financial Programs, The Black Dollar and Entrepreneurships, Young Author’s Program,
Literacy Programs, Coats, Canned Goods, Pocketbooks, Eyeglasses, and Shoes Drives,
Pillowcase Dresses for African girls, Easter Celebrations, Operation Santa Claus, Health
and Fitness Awareness, Tribute to Senior Citizens and Mothers, Heath Initiatives, the
Arts, Global Issues, Relay for Life, Breast Cancer Awareness, Blood Drives, Clean Sweep,
Cultural and Educational Exposure, and Programs to support Healthy Teen Relationships
and Domestic Violence. We are extremely proud of our chapter’s signature icon, our Biennial
Debutante Ball. We have introduced many young ladies to society, provided cultural,
social, and educational experiences, and assisted them to acquire a scholarship to attend
a post-secondary education institution.
The Kappa Iota Omega Chapter is very involved in the advancement of lives in our
various communities. It is our continued commitment to “Render Service to All Mankind”.
