               Challenges of Clinical Teaching

The education of nurses in Croatia has been increasing since the 2010/2011 school year. carried
out for a duration of five years, according to the Vocational Curriculum for obtaining the
General Care Nurse/General Care Medical Technician qualification. In relation to the
Vocational Curriculum from 1991, the new Vocational Curriculum includes an increase in the
hours of practical classes. Given that practical teaching is mostly carried out in a clinical
environment, it is evident that clinical teaching in Croatia, as well as in the rest of the world,
constitutes the main part of nursing education.
Clinical mentors play a significant role in clinical teaching. Clinical mentor is a person who
simultaneously fulfills the role of a nurse, the role of a teacher and the role of a person. The role
of clinical mentors is performed by teachers of vocational subjects in healthcare employed in
secondary schools and external associates. Clinical teaching enables the development of critical
thinking and freedom in decision-making. In contrast to classroom education, clinical teaching
takes place in the unpredictable environment of healthcare facilities. Clinical teaching, due to
its numerous specificities, presents daily challenges.
