The Impact of Digital Age Communication on Nursing
Profession
The way we communicate has significantly changed with the development of communication
technologies, especially social media. Online communication, unlike interpersonal
communication, is much faster, and information spreads more quickly among participants. In
this type of communication, new forms of expression and language are created. The
development of digital communication devices has led to the massification of communication.
This raises the question of to what extent this way of communication brings people together
and to what extent it separates them, as well as the dangers it holds. New communication habits
encompass all spheres of human life, including nursing.
Technology was a key tool in communication between professionals and patients during the
COVID-19 pandemic. The digital age has changed the way nurses provide healthcare, manage
data, and collaborate with the multidisciplinary team. Effective use of modern technology can
improve the use of time and resources, support the coordination of services, enhance real-time
communication, help monitor patient health, enable easier access to evidence-based
information, and increase the time for nurse-patient communication. It is important to strike a
balance between embracing innovations and the fundamental essence of healthcare. Effective
communication, active listening, and empathy are hallmarks of patient-centered care.
The integration of digital technologies in healthcare requires a critical approach to the extent to
which it reshapes nursing practice and the impact it may have on patient care.
