Bosch's new radar system will pull away, brake, avoid
accidents and even stop for you
osch is set to revolutionize
motorcycle safety with its
Bn e w r a d a r s y s t e m ,
launching in 2025. This advanced
technology will enable motorcycles
to autonomously stop behind
vehicles, apply extra braking force
to avoid collisions, alert riders to
nearby dangers, and even assist
with starting from a stop while
following traffic.
This next-generation system is part
of Bosch's Advanced Rider
Assistance Systems (ARAS) and
will first be featured on a new V-
twin KTM Super Adventure model,
which will incorporate a semi-
automatic AMT (Automatic Manual
Transmission) gearbox.
Geoff Liersch, Bosch's President of
Two-Wheeler and Powersports,
emphasized the strong partnership
w i t h K T M i n d e v e l o p i n g
technologies that enhance safety
without diminishing the enjoyment
of riding. This insight came during a
d e m o n s t r a t i o n a t B o s c h ’s
Shiobara Proving Ground in
J a p a n , w h e r e w e h a d
opportunity to test the prototype
KTM equipped with the new
system.
The KTM will benefit from six
innovative systems, building on the
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
found in the 1290 Super Adventure
S. Key features include Group Ride
Assist (GRA), which adjusts the
motorcycle's speed based on the
nearest bike in a group, and an
upgraded Stop & Go function that
can bring the bike to a complete

stop behind the vehicle
ahead and then smoothly
resume movement with the
rider's confirmation.
Thanks to the new AMT
gearbox, the motorcycle can
change gears automatically
in response to the vehicle in
front, eliminating the risk of
stalling during stops.
Safety enhancements
include Emergency Brake Assist,
which increases front brake
pressure when a potential collision
is detected, but only activates if the
rider has already applied the
brakes. It won't engage at speeds
over 160 kph (about 100 mph).

electromagnetic waves to detect
distance, relative speed, and
direction of surrounding objects. It
c o m m u n i c a t e s w i t h
motorcycle's Engine Control Unit
(ECU) and stability systems to
monitor dynamics, including lean
angles, allowing it to adjust braking
force appropriately.

While debuting on the KTM Super
Adventure, Bosch envisions this
technology being adopted across a
wider range of models. Liersch
expressed hopes that it could
eventually be made affordable
enough for all riders, much like
ABS, which has gained traction
even in entry-level motorcycles.
Key features of the Bosch ARAS
include:
• Adaptive Cruise Control +
Stop & Go: Automatically
maintains a safe distance from
the vehicle ahead, bringing the
bike to a stop if necessary, and
allows it to resume movement
with a button press.
• Group Ride Assist: Adjusts
the motorcycle's speed based
on the closest bike in a group,
preventing large gaps during
rides.
• Riding Distance Assist:
P r e v e n t s t a i l g a t i n g b y
monitoring the distance to the
v e h i c l e i n f r o n t a n d
decelerating as needed.
• Rear Distance Warning:
Alerts the rider if a vehicle is too
close from behind.
• Rear Collision Warning:
Activates hazard lights if a rear-
end collision is likely.
Emergency Brake Assist: Provides
additional braking power to prevent
accidents, activating only after the
rider applies the brakes.
With these innovations, Bosch
aims to significantly enhance
motorcycle safety and contribute to
reducing accident rates globally.
