Kanthraj Urs, who implemented Miller Committee report, was the first non Brahmin
Dewan since 1881. This appointment was a positive development as far as the aspirations
of the Vokkaligas to hold as many Government posts as possible. K. H. Ramaiah,
M. Subbaiah, Barrister Vijaya Dev played a major role in starting hostels and reading
rooms exclusively for Vokkaliga boys. These men organized community meetings at Taluk
level and impressed upon rich Vokkaligas to start hostels, reading rooms and educational
institutions for Vokkaliga boys and girls. There are instances where rich Vokkaligas in rural
areas contributed money and materials to start primary schools to educate young boys
and girls . A Brahmin interest oriented newspaper Sampadabhyudaya opposed such

tours and collection of funds by Vokkaliga leaders. It feared misappropriation of funds so
collected. It urged the Government to pass an order prohibiting such collection of money
for the purpose of constructing hostels and schools. This move by Sampadabhyudaya
was opposed by other newspapers like Vrutanta Patrike and Mysore Star .

Even students belonging to Vokkaliga Commmunity often met and invited leading
men and members of the Mysore Representative Assembly to participate in meetings
and give a talk as to how they should progress in the field of education and gaining
access to government service. Here the students also presented their demands and
asked for construction of hostels wherever Vokkaliga population was concentrated and
also to provide financial assistance to Vokkaliga students aspiring for higher education.
B.Nagappa an advocate, H K Mallappa, K.H Ramaiah, B N Vijaya Dev and others took
leading part in such student meets .

The above study clearly indicate how the aspirations of the Vokkaliga leaders and even
youth changed with the publication of the Miller Committee Report. A community which
was until then attached to land and was reluctant to migrate, started to look outward
and towards greener pastures, In the subsequent years the Vokkaligas because of their
numerical strength and awakening also took up the politlcal leadership.
