at UBC, which further gave me much needed emotional intelligence (EI/EQ) to deal with,
“expecting the unexpected”. With all these setbacks, the undercurrent was strong, which
manifested itself into positive results. My stay at UBC was five years to be exact, but I
ended up getting two acclaimed degrees: a Master’s and a PhD, in the same time it
would have taken for me to get a PhD alone. Moreover, my professor at UBC informed
me that my time to complete my PhD was the second fastest to date!Such is life.

The roots of my interest in electronic devices lead back to the Geotechnical Laboratory
at UBC. Here I was designing laboratory equipment interfaced with electronic devices,
and real time experimental control and the ability to monitor with software development
(Man-Machine Interfaces (MMIs) -IoT without Internet). The project was about design
parameters for Geosynthetics to sustain Earthquake loads, titled ‘Large Scale Pullout
Testing of Geosynthetics’.
a) Calibration of Geosynthetics and preparation of experiments
b) Instrumentation of Geosynthetic grid and attaching to the Loading System
