Questionnaire:
What golf course have you worked on that have a
similar history, style, and layout to RBCC?
This question can be answered in two parts, but both are based on McDonald Design Group’s
extensive experience renovating golf facilities within the Mid-Atlantic Region.
First, McDonald Design Group has remodeled dozens of courses previously designed or ren-
ovated by Russel Roberts and/or Brian Ault. These two men have created the RBCC course
that is now played, and their work can generally be classified as utilitarian as nearly all of
these facilities have two things in common. These facilities are generally well routed, mean-
ing the positioning and sequencing of golf holes functions well. RBCC’s course developed by
these men fit this description, as the 19 holes are routed efficiently on less than 135 acres of
ground. However, these Roberts or Ault facilities are also generally less-than-inspiring exam-
ples of strategic architecture and the courses often lack artistic and beautiful features that
are found in more timeless pieces of golf course architecture. When renovating these cours-
es, McDonald has selected a variety of new design themes to infuse a unique character and
identity into each facility. RBCC needs a similar infusion.
Secondly, within just the past 12 months, we have developed detailed drainage programs for
similarly challenging Eastern Shore golf facilities including Bayside, Kings Creek, Cripple
Creek, Talbot, Prospect Bay, Heritage Shores. This is in addition to working on numerous oth-
er improvement programs where flat terrain, groundwater, and tides that have complicated
the design and construction process. McDonald Design Group’s previous work to RBCC’s
12th fairway and our more recent practice facilities program utilized different strategies but
both successfully maximized drainage within the two most chronically wet portions of the
property.
Please note these two responses encapsulate an important required element of the upcom-
ing RBCC Long-Range Plan. The Plan must balance the scientific renovation elements
(drainage/agronomics) with the artistic elements (strategy/styling/feel) of the upcoming golf
course renovation to be successful. We look forward to discussing how our detailed design
approach will provide that necessary balance for a stunning RBCC golf course transfor-
mation.
