ACADEMIC & PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION
Cornell University
Bachelor of Science, Landscape Architecture 1997
Guest Lecturer, University of Maryland 2012-
Senior Designer, McDonald Design Group, Inc. 1996-
Joel entered Cornell University with the dream of designing golf courses. While at Cornell, Joel arranged
numerous golf course independent studies with industry leaders including Tom Doak.
Prior to Joel’s senior year he interned with McDonald & Sons, a highly respected golf course builder. Fol-
lowing graduation, Joel rejoined McDonald as their sole designer. Due to our early design/build successes,
McDonald Design Group was formed in 2001. McDonald Design Group has since grown into the most pro-
lific full-service design/build firm in the nation and is fortunate to have talented Design Associates Buck
Young and Logan Thompson join the team.
With over 140 McDonald & Sons employees and $10,000,000 worth of equipment resources at hand, many
Mid-Atlantic clubs are enjoying the multitude of benefits that a seamless design/build relationship entails.
As Mr. Dye said: “You don’t design a great golf course, you build it.”. This will be especially true for
MVCC’s complex and perhaps phased implementation program.
