Bethesda Country Club’s renovation programs have targeted playability and maintainability. Green renova-
tions have improved maintenance and hole set-up capabilities. Tree management has increased fairway
widths and growing conditions. Fairway drainage and grading has improved the course’s “speed” as well as
agronomics. New bunkering has augmented the layout’s strategy and visual definition.
Bethesda can be considered a “cozy” property, and I have enjoyed turning that potential/perceived weak-
ness into a strength by blending features together to provide the charm of interconnected golf (especially
for the walking player). Bethesda’s recent improvements, as well as our recently conceived ongoing Long
Range Enhancement Program will continue to augment this design theme.
McDonald Design Group has also shepherded similar renovation programs at nearby Columbia Country Club
and Woodmont Country Club. We have worked to ensure these three esteemed neighboring (and competi-
tive) Clubs have developed a course character and identity that is appropriate for their individual proper-
ties, and in turn, is unique within their shared private club market area.
