CFBPW 2023/2024 Public Policy Co-Chair
& Bill Screening Committee Report
The Bill Screening Committee has reviewed and voted on 14 legislative bills this
year. However, our main advocacy has been for AB518, AB524, AB575, these bills
have to do with different areas of family leave; as well as SB618 which has to do with
paid family leave.
Screening committee member Elaine Sierra represents CFBPW on the California
Work and Family Coalition. With her help and guidance the committee has been advo-
cating in support of the bills mentioned above, as part of the Coalition. Elaine was also
instrumental in getting the public policy and screening committee members an invita-
tion to participate in the Work and Family Coalition Advocacy Week which was conduct-
ed by zoom. Several of us who were available during the day joined the other mem-
bers of the Coalition in lobbying members of the California State Senate and Assembly.

Advocacy Week started on August 21 and ended August 25 with a wrap-up session.
st
I was fortunate to join the group on Monday, August 21 in the afternoon that was lob-
bying my two State Senators, Susan Rubio and Anthony Portantino. (As a result of re-
districting I have two state senators until the next election.) Actually we met with their
aides. On Tuesday morning I was able to join the groups lobbying State Senator Men-
jivar and Assemblyman Hart when we again met with their aides. I was not able to at-
th
th
tend the training on August 15 nor the wrap-up session on the 25 . A couple of days
after this event they asked us to contact our own representatives and lobby them by
telephone. So I was able to speak to an aide in both Senator Rubio’s office and Assem-
blyman Holders office.
This was a very interesting experience and I think it was very empowering to
work with a coalition that shares our CFBPW mission.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the CFBPW Board Meeting on October 21,
2023.
