Marjory Hopper
1932 - 2024
Now you all know Marjory’s age because if you asked her how old she was,
she would say “A lady never tells.” If you asked her when her birthday was,
she would say Guy Fawkes Day. If you did not know the day, she would tell
you November 5th.
Marjory was a native of Cincinnati, Ohio. She came to California when she
still was in school with her parents. She is a graduate of Whittier College and
received her Master’s in Library and Information Science from the University
of Southern California. For most of her life she lived on Deveron Drive in
Whittier. She was a librarian for the City of Los Angeles – most recently at
the John C. Fremont Branch Library for more than 30 years before she went
on (as she termed it) “Extended vacation.” Each work day she commuted
from Whittier to the Fremont Branch, which is in the Hollywood area. Her
specialty was working with children as a storyteller, puppeteer and book
talker. She received the City of Los Angeles Community Service Award, the
Children's Service's (LAPL) Award for outstanding Children's Librarian, the
Hollywood Coordinating Council Outstanding Community Service Award and
the Woman's Club of Hollywood’s award for Excellence to the Community.
When she was a librarian at Fremont Branch, she was invited to the Holly-
wood Coordinating Council. The President of the Council mentioned BPW and
invited her to a meeting of Hollywood BPW. That was more than 50 years
ago. Marjory’s cousin Jim said that “BPW was her life.” She was very dedicat-
ed to BPW. She attended many BPW-International Congresses in places such
as Australia, Canada, Mexico and Finland. When she attended the BPW Inter-
national Congress in Helsinki, she was selected to represent North America
and the Caribbean Region. …/...
