At a campaign stop in Hibbing MN today, vice president Pence declared that Trump is the “most pro-life president in history.” In fact, Trump’s position on a woman’s right to control her body has been all over her anatomy, so to speak.
In 1989, he co-sponsored a dinner at The Plaza honoring former NARAL president, Robin Duke. Reportedly, Trump decided not to attend after some anti-abortion activists threatened to burn down the hotel, which he owned at the time.
In a 1999 interview with Tim Russert on NBC News, Trump said, “I am very pro-choice. I just believe in choice. I am pro-choice in every respect. I am the most pro-choice person in history,” stressing the fact that he grew up in Manhattan, not flyover Iowa.
In 2015 at the first GOP presidential debate, Trump was asked why he suddenly became pro-life after being pro-choice for years. He answered, “What happened is friends of mine were going to have a child, and that child today is a total superstar, a great, great son and a child that’s very close to me. And then I decided to run for president. And I am very, very proud to say that I am now the most pro-life person in the country.”
In a 2016 interview with Chris Mathews, Trump said that women who have abortions after it is illegal would be subject to punishment. The men involved would not. “Men are only involved for a short period of
