President Trump’s Go-To Attorney General William Barr scored a setback today from a federal judge who ruled that the U.S. Government could not be a defendant in a defamation lawsuit arising out of a rape accusation against the president.
In simple terms, Trump is accused of raping journalist E. Jean Carroll in a Manhattan department store dressing room in the 1990s.
Trump denied it, among other nasty labels, during interviews in 2019. In response, Carroll sued Trump for defamation.
Barr rushed to Trump’s defense and filed a countersuit claiming that the defendant in the case must be the U.S. Government because the president was acting as the President of the United States when he issued his denials.
Asked how the U.S. Government could be a defendant in a defamation suit, Barr responded, “In the previous administration, the government had to defend itself against lies all the time. Like when Obama lied about playing basketball in the White House gym when he was actually working. Like when Michelle Obama lied about planting that vegetable garden on the South Lawn, when it really was an herb garden. The Obamas never went to court over these lies. The U.S. Government did. We are just asking that president Trump be given the same privilege.”
