President Trump and the Third Lady made a trip to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery today, his first public appearance since losing the election to Joe Biden.
Vice president Pence and his Mother Karen accompanied the Trumps. The entourage arrived unfashionably late after the traditional gun salute to veterans. A Secret Service escort revealed that the retinue was instructed to take a detour to delay arrival because the president was in a foul mood after missing Fox & Friends.
Standing next to Pence in heavy rain, the president walked up to the wreath, touched it briefly, limply saluted and returned to his mark. Trump did not utter a word and was visibly irritated. The fact that the 10-minute ritual appeared to interfere with his otherwise empty day was not lost on this observer. No one in the group wore a mask or socially distanced, even though multiple staffers in Pence’s inner circle are battling Covid-45.
Earlier in the day, a Proclamation on Veterans Day was posted on whitehouse.gov, conspicuously missing the president’s EKG-style Sharpie signature. In the proclamation, Trump takes credit for completely overhauling the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and numerous other vanity initiatives to give veterans “the best health care and support available.” Frankly, the reality in no way reflects the smug words.
