VA facilities across the country have long suffered from recruitment and retention challenges, but none as serious as those associated
with the Trump administration. Trump’s appointed team of lackeys
has unleashed vicious attacks on VA unions and employees. Trump has signed several empty executive orders that carry no funding.
He also signed legislation giving veterans access to care outside the VA system, which vastly expanded a previous policy. As a result, billions of dollars are being syphoned from the Veterans Administration budget to pay for privatization – Trump’s #1 goal. The number of firings and resignations by frontline staff has exploded, causing even more system-wide upheaval in the VA.
Trump has pandered to the military from his first day in office. On one hand, he expresses absolute respect for veterans, while calling those who died or were captured, “losers” and “suckers.” He routinely undermines active-duty commanders and allows actual murderers to wear and defile the uniform.
This is the same “person” who refused to wear a mask when honoring WWII veterans earlier this year, one day after Trump’s personal valet tested positive for Covid-45. Referring to the veterans and the virus, Trump said, “I think they’re so pure, it will never happen. Alright? They’ve lived a great life.”
