Since the election was called for Biden, messages from global leaders have been pouring in to congratulate President-elect Biden and to express profound relief. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tweeted that the E.U. and U.S. could “shape the global agenda based on shared values” mutilated by Trump. Her tweet ended with five emojis, each in tears with thumbs up.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called Biden to congratulate and thank him for returning to the White House as “a strong supporter of NATO and the transatlantic relationship.” He went on to welcome a Biden administration and resumption of sanity after three years of Trump’s guttermouth.
In the meantime President-elect Biden has announced several key positions in his administration. Today, he nominated former Federal Reserve chairwoman Janet Yellen as his treasury secretary. Tomorrow he is expected to nominate Tony Blinken as secretary of state; Alejandro Mayorkas as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security; and John Kerry to lead climate policy — all deeply experienced and ethical public servants.
