The sonnet written in 1903 by Emma Lazarus and cast onto a bronze plaque and mounted inside the Statue of Liberty pedestal’s lower level was replaced this week. In the stealth of night, an unidentified team of government contractors carried out the deed. Formerly titled The New Colossus, the plaque now reads:
The Big Whopper
Like the brazen man of New York fame,
With the smallest hands astride the East River; Here at our gold-washed, distopian gates shall stand A very sexy woman with a torch, whose flame
Is white-hot lightening, and her name Mistress of Trump. Her experienced hand Entices worldwide welcome; her wild eyes command The constant caresses that men so crave. “Keep your golden hands for me” cries she With silent lips. “Give me your aroused, your rich, Your mobsters yearning to break and steal free, The worthy assets from your teeming shore. Send these, the monied goons, to me,
