Early this morning, president Trump suggested in a tweet that the election be indefinitely postponed until “people can properly, securely and safely vote.”
The very idea that a sitting president could change a federal election date sent both Democrats and Republicans in the Congress into paroxysms. This is the first time that members of both political parties presented a chorus of “no” to the president. Republicans whispered the word, while Democrats shouted their “no” from the rooftops.
In fact, the president has no authority or ability to change the November 3 election date, which is set by Congress. According to presidential historian Michael Beschloss, “Never in American history – not even during the Civil War and World War II – has there been a successful move to ‘Delay the Election’ for President.”
An anonymous White House source reveraled that the president was jumping-up-and-down furious that Joe Biden was “eating his lunch” at the polls. According to the source, “The president does not believe in polls, until they reflect poorly on him. Then it’s take off – or is it put on? – the gloves. Trump will fight with every lie he can concoct to prevent hearing ‘YOU’RE FIRED!’ from Biden’s lips.”
