One day, Tumang refused to follow his command to chase
prey, so Sangkuriang sent the dog into the forest. When he
returned to the palace, Sangkuriang told his mother what had
happened. Dayang Sumbi was furious upon hearing the story.
In her anger, she accidentally hit Sangkuriang's head with a rice
spoon, causing a wound. Deeply disappointed, Sangkuriang left
and wandered away. Regretting her actions, Dayang Sumbi
prayed and meditated diligently.
One day, the gods rewarded her. She would remain young
and beautiful forever. After years of wandering, Sangkuriang
decided to return home. When he arrived, the kingdom had
changed entirely. There he met a beautiful woman who was
actually Dayang Sumbi. Enchanted by her beauty, Sangkuriang
proposed to her.
Since Sangkuriang was very handsome, Dayang Sumbi was
also charmed by him. One day, Sangkuriang asked for
permission to go hunting and asked Dayang Sumbi to tidy his
headband. Dayang Sumbi was shocked to see the scar on his
head, which was identical to the one her son had. Realizing this,
she became very frightened and sought a way to cancel the
engagement.
She gave Sangkuriang two conditions. First, he had to dam
the Citarum River. Second, he had to make a big boat to cross
the river. Both tasks had to be completed before dawn. That
night, Sangkuriang meditated and used his magic to summon
supernatural beings to help him complete the tasks.
Dayang Sumbi secretly watched the work. As it was nearly
finished, she ordered her soldiers to spread a red silk cloth in the
eastern part of the city. Seeing the red color, Sangkuriang
thought the day had ended. He stopped working and was very
