3.6 Visualising of Complex Data

During key stages of a design project vast amounts of information and
data is collected pertaining to research or design specification. This
complex data needs to be reviewed, synthesised and applied. Visualising sketching styles
it can be an effective way of organising the information in order to
effectively apply it to a final design.

Often the origins of this data analysis will begin in the design research
journal but will transfer to the design sketchbook for refinement. At a
Masters level it is this graphic that often forms the basis of the research
             study.

Design in Carlow focuses on ‘humanising innovation’. When sketching it
is important to have the user represented. Designing a handheld device
and never seeing it sketched in context is not acceptable. Take time to
offer the human context as it will scale and provide proportion.

the sketcher must understand why the human is being added. When
sketching to explore and iterate, the human context must be drawn
At key decision making phases of a project morphology charts can be quickly so as not to interrupt the thought flow. The purpose at this stage
used to organise a vast array of data to assist in the decision making is to indicate human scale or to show human positioning in relation to
process. In a grid format, plotted along an X and Y axis, criteria can be ergonomics or interaction. In this instance it is acceptable to represent
aligned to possible solutions. The morphology chart is flexible and the human as a stick figure. There are many styles of stick figures that
adaptable to many different tasks. Line quality is essential to the clarity convey accuracy efficiently. Begin to understand and practice each style
of the chart as there is a lot of information and sketching in one place. and find the one that suits best.
