3.3 Understanding Objects in 3 Dimensions
I am a three dimmensional designer
Visualising objects in 3 dimensions is a skill all designers must develop.
Mentally visualise an object and rotate in in all directions. When working
out the form of an object or communicating a design to a client, sketching styles
visualising it through sketchwork is essential. 3.4 Funtionality & Syntax
Sketching can be used to understand and communicate the functionality
and movement within an object. The ‘syntax’ is an investigation of step
by step functionality of a product and provides instructive guidelines that
communicate this function. The use of arrows within this style can
demonstrate movement. Use large arrows when showing movement and
small arrows to notate direction of work. (see reference for details p30)

The essence of this style of sketching is being able to draw in a range of
views. Overuse of a single perspective view can look naive and lazy, but Fig 3.5 Sample Syntax Hilary Dempsey 2016
using multiple views increases the dynamic nature of a sketch sheet.
Constantly practice 2 and 3 point perspective and experiment with their Clear line drawing combined with iterations of movement offer clarity and
position in relation to the horizon line. The type of product being designed perspective for designers and clients. Silhouetting is also a key skill that
will determine the view being sketched. Never be afraid to overlap brings life to these sketches. Note when silhouetting only use your black
sketching as it brings depth to the sheet. Use every part of the sketch felt tip pens. Never use a colour. Using a colour gives it a ‘Ready Brek glow’
sheet as blank space will have more impact. and flattens the image rather than lifting it.
