Remembering Barbara Bush
The beautiful funeral and burial of First
Lady Barbara Bush brought back memo-
ries of the award-winning Reading Is
Fundamental (RIF) program that served
thousands of children in several Hunts-
ville City and Madison County Schools
for over forty years and was sponsored by
Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. In 1986,
twenty outstanding (RIF) projects
throughout the U.S. were chosen to be
recognized in Washington D.C. Barbara
Anthony represented the local project and
received one of the awards from Mrs.
Bush. Among several members of the
chapter who were also dedicated to litera-
cy, lending service for many years, were
Fellowship’s Dr. Constance Dees and
Evelyn Rich. The picture shows Barbara
Anthony receiving the award from Mrs.
Bush for the chapter.
