Secondary December 2022 Highlights 07
  Velvet Revolution
in CAL lessons
We don’t often ask our students to be really loud, make noise with their keys and march around the classroom. However, last week was very different. Our Y7 students learned about life in Czechoslovakia during com- munism, discussed what freedom meant to them and listened to Czech songs related
to the Velvet Revolution. Finally, they made their own posters and tried to replicate the Velvet Revolution in the classroom.

Trigonometry outdoors
How tall Is our school building?
Applied mathematics can answer that.
Ms. Barlow’s Year 9 Maths class took their trigonometry skills outside to indirectly measure the height of our school building. By measuring the angle of elevation and the distance to the building, students were able to calculate the corresponding height of the building. The students made their own clinometers out of available material.
Junior Astrophysics Challenge
On Monday, November 21, ten Year 11 Physics students completed the Junior Astrophys- ics Challenge. This came as two 25-minute online quizzes, which the students attempted over the month of November. This was a big step for those involved, as we had only just completed the part of the syllabus which introduced this vast topic. They had to do a lot of background reading and research for themselves to prepare for this. We are delighted to say that the group achieved: 5 Bronze Level Certificates / 4 Silver Level Certifi- cates / and 4 Gold Level Certificates. Well done everybody involved.

Winter Market
After a 3-year wait, we finally got to enjoy our traditional Winter Market! The event hosted a large number of Park Lane community members together with their friends and families, enjoying an afternoon with a truly Christmassy atmosphere! Children had a lot of fun enjoying the arts and crafts and gingerbread decorating activities, while par- ents searched for Christmas presents and enjoyed a wide variety of delicious food and drinks. Our Primary and Secondary students gave amazing performances on stage and even the teacher’s band performed as a surprise! Thank you to everyone who attended the event, we hope to see you all at next year’s Winter Market!
