08 Learning Centre Activities December 2022 Secondary
The Learning Centre Activities
Life in the Learning Centre continues to “buzz” with so many different events and activities taking place.
COLLABORATION LEARNING THEMES
The year started with the theme of “Respect” Respect is especially important in the Learning Centre where we look at “Intellectual Copyright.” Students made posters using pictures and information found on the website which they then referenced. This theme was followed up in PE with an emphasis on respecting rules and equipment. In Geography students looked at “Respect for the Environment.”
The next theme “Black History Month” also included a strong emphasis on respect. Various classroom doors were decorated for the theme. These included Famous Black
Musicians and Mathematicians, but my personal favourite was the very sassy black girl wearing a t-shirt showing famous black people.
Ghouls and Witches featured heavily during the Day of the Dead theme and the LC was turned into a spooky place with its own coffin.
“World Cup Fever” was the next theme, but World Cup Madness might have been a better title as the start of the World Cup produced so many upsets that the tutor groups found it difficult to predict the winners. In addition to match prediction all of the classes did reading comprehen- sion on the World Cup.
The excitement generated has encouraged lots of students, mostly boys, to choose football themed books to read. A highlight was the visit of Karol Kisel.
SPECIAL EVENTS
The Grand Opening of the library at Úvoz and the Poetry Café
The official opening of the new library
at Úvoz took place on 2nd November along with a Poetry Café. The ribbons were officially cut by Mr. Ingarfield and Mr Churchill and the Poetry Café spe- cial guest was Mr. Ash Dickinson. Ash Dickinson climbed up the hill from a day of workshops with younger students to perform his unique brand of spoken word poetry. As well as Ash, poems were re- cited by a range of students from Y7–Y11. The students, who had written original poetry around the theme of 'Who Am I?', shared their astonishingly mature and reflective verses.
Mr. Ingarfield read two poems that he
had written whilst in Secondary School which gave us an interesting insight into Mr. Ingarfield’s youth. It really was a mem- orable and fitting way to share our appreci- ation and hopes for this special space.
