Part 3: Migration
Part 3 Objectives
This is the final part of the process where you will build and edit your new u3a
SiteWorks site in the server-hosted environment and go live with it.
What happens next?
Your Migrator will contact you to discuss the migration with you; whether you
want to continue with migration or would prefer a Starter site, and anything you
want to discuss at this time such as migration speed. He/she will identify and
agree with you a mutually convenient date to begin the migration.
Your Migrator will request that the server-hosted site be available on the date
you have agreed. The chosen subdomain name of your site will be needed for
this such as www.anytown.u3asite.uk . You will also need to tell your Migrator
which page will be your Home page. For sites continuing with the migration
process he/she will also request the final Site Builder extract from the sysadmin
team for the same date.
Where a Site Builder extract is going to be used you need to advise in advance all
who have editing access to your site that this is going to happen on the agreed
date and instigate a data freeze for this on the site. A good time for this would
probably be midnight on the day before migration begins. Any site editing after
the final Site Builder extract has been taken will need to be replicated on the new
SiteWorks site.
Your Migrator will get access to your new SiteWorks site on the appointed day
and take you through the initial set-up process such as logon and password.
You then build and edit your new site using the knowledge gained from this
training and your own planning and testing in the pre-migration phase. A gentle
reminder that your Migrator is not a trainer and is there to handle the more
technical issues relating to setting up your new site as well as logging progress
within the u3a process and keeping the necessary records. There are a lot more
sites than there are Migrators so we need to use their time as effectively as
possible. He/she will help you but you are expected to undertake the majority of
the editing as you are the person who knows your site. In your pre-migration
preparation you might have already identified some items where the expertise of
the Migrator would be helpful so you need to agree between you who will be
doing what.
Your preparation to this point is important as if it becomes obvious to the
Migrator that you are expecting him/her to do the bulk of the work as you don’t
know how to do it then he/she reserves the right to slip your migration to a later
date to give you the opportunity to improve your knowledge. After migration
you will be responsible for the ongoing site maintenance and editing so it is
important that you know how to do this.
