As Web Manager you will need to be involved on at least three occasions.
1. You need to become familiar with the Author Training guide so that you
know what your authors will be doing and know what kind of questions
they could ask you.
2. Right up front you need to create an author login and send it to your new
author. This will enable them to see everything on the author dashboard
menu but, in practice they will only be able to make changes to a Post and
media. They can be left to their own devices during the block learning and
practice but have been advised to contact you if help is needed.
3. Once finished the block learning and practice the author will approach you
and ask to be given access to the page(s) that he/she will be editing and
maintaining so you need to set this up.
Overall you are advised to quietly keep an eye on the initial page/block editing
work and certainly to keep a watchful eye on the editing of the real live pages
until you are confident that the author is competent.
Once you receive the Author Training please at least read sections 1 and 2 as
these set author expectations and provide instructions as to how to proceed.
This includes where to get help; YOU and User Guides, and not Help Desk please,
as our small team of volunteers just cannot cope with a few hundred authors
making contact. Any author contact will be referred back to you and, if you can’t
answer the question and the answer is not in the User Guides, then you can
contact the Help Desk.
Section 1b discusses what authors need to know. An author who will be editing
and maintaining a fairly simple page of text and media probably needs less
knowledge than someone who runs a group that has varied events and who
wants to write a blog with photos after each one. (Note that you might be asked
to create the Post template/query loop.) This section includes the above chart
so that authors can decide which sections are most useful to them but you can
no doubt advise as you know your site the best.
At the start of section 2 the author will need a login but that is all as he/she will
then be using a Post page and the media library. The author can then work
his/her way through the required sections until ***Next Steps*** after section 6.
At this time he/she will need access to his/her own page(s) to be able to put new
knowledge into practice. Note that section 2 also directs your author to read the
Terms of Use of the website and also the Privacy policy of your own u3a.
If you would like a copy of the Author Training then please contact
training@siteworks.u3a.org.uk to request one.
