They wished they had freely discussed
these issues with their children. Perhaps,
many lives would have been saved.
After everyone had expressed their
feelings, the local leaders spoke to the
parents and their children. They hoped that
Tamu’s sad experience would discourage
children and other people from taking the
risky journey for a better life or work
elsewhere.
They also used this opportunity to talk to
parents and guardians about the dangers
of forcing their children to marry early or
to marry people they don’t love.
Many children, especially girls, were
dropping out of school because of early
marriage.
