first child Alicia, I was overjoyed that I
even could learn English with her, or
sometimes, from her. Improving my
English subconsciously became one of
my priorities. I practiced with Alicia
while she was growing, reading books
for her at night, picking up new words
along the way and engaging
conversations in English with her at
home. That habit inadvertently made
my wife’s effort of teaching her Chinese
largely wasted.
Soon after I joined my current company,
my boss hinted that I should improve
my English, so I even joined
Toastmaster International for a while to
practice my impromptu response and
public speak, which helped me quite a
bit in understanding the subtleness and
