The Duke of Edinburgh Award
Every year, cadets from across Greater Manchester Wing complete their Duke of Edinburgh awards. Whether
this would be Blue, Bronze, Silver or Gold award, each cadet puts in many hours off commitment and work
into achieving their award.
Across Greater Manchester Wing, we currently have 400 cadets doing their Bronze Award, 160 completing their
Silver award and 65 cadets working towards the coveted Gold Award.
In February 2020, 28 cadets from across the wing undertook DofE basic training has at 80 (Bolton) Sqn. This
training was organised to help add to their Initial Expedition Training and Map Reading modules of First Class
syllabus, took make sure they were confident in undertaking the Expedition section of the Bronze and Silver
Duke of Edinburgh award.
Flt Lt Coakley, Sgt Lomax lead the training with support from Sqn Ldr Ryan, WO Donnelly and CI Hoodless.
Throughout the Covid pandemic, many cadets
have completed the other sections of their award
such as volunteering, skills and physical. Making
the most of the lockdown situation, to help out
elderly neighbours who were shielding, learning
how to bake banana bread or getting out walking
and running. All these activities count towards
their final award, these sections are just as im-
portant as the expedition and can be just as much
fun to complete.
We had hope to run the expeditions during the summer of 2020, however with
the global situation, these were put on hold, however we hope to have these
completed plus many more expeditions during 2021.
