Kosraen Youth Group
By C.L. Mongkeya
I am from Hawaii. This story took place in Kona, which is on the big island where all the
Kosraean youth groups from around the islands go to learn more about the word of God. Many
people went to the revival, including my family and friends. It all started when I was just a
13-year-old. I lived in a large household and was always shy and nervous. I am never the type to
talk a lot. My sister, Grace, my brother Ricky and I were told by our mom, Sepe, that we were
going to be joining a small youth group that our pastor made. Our mom was like the boss in our
family that everyone was afraid of. She was always right, so we couldn’t say no to joining. I
simply wondered what the youth group was and why I had to join.
The first time I joined, we started with icebreakers, introducing ourselves to each other.
The youth leaders started with group activities so we would
be more comfortable with each other, and of course, I was shy
and nervous. I only knew a couple of people, my little cousin
Tyrone and my childhood friends Lani, Lino, and Lg. The
next day after school, the leaders invited a Kosraean
choreographer to show us moves to a song for a dance
competition. The dance competition was just for fun so all
youths could gather and learn about the word of God. Once
the choreographer showed us how to dance to a gospel song,
we started practicing it for a couple of weeks till we all perfected it. Every time practice was
over, we would all eat, talk and have fun playing games. Everyone enjoyed going to youth 5 days
a week.
