42 The Unforgettable Moments in Life
Kemem

This story is about kemem. A kemem is to celebrate a 1 year old baby. At the celebration, my
mom, Angelia, is wearing a red dress with little white flowers. My mom drove the car to take us
to the kemem. As we got to the place, I walked inside the building and there were not a lot of
people that had come just yet, but I saw my grandma sitting and waiting for us.
The first thing we do at the celebration is that the priest prays to God for the baby and the
baby's parents. When we’re done praying, some women go to the kitchen and put food on plates
and some women pass the food out. The main food that we always put on the plates is rice and
chicken. Then we add other food like spaghetti, potato salad, and salmon. Next, we start singing
and celebrating the baby’s kemem. When the musicians play songs, they play traditional music.
There are people that get up and dance to have fun and make people laugh so hard. We love
