Hispanic Tradition
By Carly O.
I remember New Year's, eating tamales before I went outside, and the smell of pozole
coming from the neighbor's house, while feeling the fresh air coming out of the house on a
cloudy night. In our usual New
Year's celebration, we have family
come over and cut the rosca de
reyes cake.
One new year I went to the
store to get grapes, plastic wine
cups, and a rosca de reyes cake. I
put ten grapes in each wine cup or you can put the grapes in another cup and add apple cider. The
ten grapes represent wishes. Each time you eat one, you make a wish. They used to give us these
little things called lentils, and I would give them to the kids. They are used for cooking. I put
them in my pocket for good luck.
We celebrate this tradition on the 6th of January. Many people celebrate by making the
bread themselves, la rosca is a type of bread with candy on top. Before cutting La rosca cake,
someone puts three tiny baby charms inside. Everyone takes a slice and if you get a baby, you
have to make food for a specific day. This is done to celebrate the three Wise Men who saw the
baby Jesus after his birth. I think having traditions is important because we all have to have fun!
