My Old Rugby Team
By Fernando Serrano
In Argentina, my country, we have two national games. The first game is futbol (soccer).
It’s a tradition that when you have a game, your family attends because if you do not go, you do
not respect your country and your sport. The second sport
is rugby. It’s similar to American football, but in rugby,
you don’t have protection. We only have a mouthpiece
and cleats. I played for six years. I tried looking for a
different sport that suited me, but I wasn’t good at any of
them. I wasn’t good at soccer and I didn't know
basketball. I was a boy and rugby was what went well
for me. My mom said I could play, so I started practicing. At first, I didn't understand the
movements well, but I learned and my mom was happy because she saw me do something that I
liked. My mom attended all my games, and my dad almost didn't because he worked, but he
wanted to see me play. Every time he went to see me, he was happy because I was doing well.
From then until six years later, I kept playing. They changed me three years later to another team
and it went well for me. It has been twelve years
since I played rugby and when we won the
championship and received a trophy, we went to
the campus to celebrate like crazy with games,
food, music, and dance. I retired two years later
and now I miss playing and being with my team.
