15 | HOSTING
MEDICAL PROBLEMS AND EMERGENCIES
A basic first aid kit should be kept in the home. If there is a medical emergency with a child / student in your care, please call 999 immediately and administer first aid until professional help arrives.
First aid in the home can be used to deal with minor injuries, please ensure that you contact College Guardians in these situations. Administering first aid:
When administering first aid you should explain to the child / student what is happening and, when at all possible ensure that another adult is present or is aware of the action being undertaken .You should;
explain what is happening;
report and record the administration of first aid;
All students studying in the UK have access to the NHS and can visit a GP as a temporary patient if your GP is not the same doctor as the school uses.
DRIVING CHILDREN / STUDENTS AND THE USE OF CAR SEATS
If any member of the host family wishes to drive a student anywhere they must have a full UK driving license and be over the age of 25. Students / children must not be driven in the car of a learner driver. The car must be correctly insured, taxed and deemed road
worthy.
The New Law for Children over 3 and up to EITHER 1.35 metres in height, OR the age of 12 must use the correct child restraint, e.g. a full car seat or booster seat.
INSURANCE - CAR AND HOUSEHOLD INSURANCE
It is important that you contact your household and car insurers to advise them that you are hosting and driving students on an occasional basis.
