palm facing up). Chop them with your knife (other hand) to the pulse as you say the first two lines of the poem. Mime putting the ingredients into the mixing bowl on the third line and repeat the chopping action again for the fourth line. Pretend to stir the mixture for the fifth line then have a cheeky taste!
Chop, chop, choppity chop,
Chop off the bottom and chop off the top. What we have left we will put in the pot. Chop, chop, choppity chop.
Stir it round, stir it round,
Tell me what you have found.
Say the poem just once or twice as you’ve done it already, make sure you make it as different from the first version as possible, and encourage the children to join in as ‘they know it really well now!’ Next, ask the children how long the cake should go in the oven for. Mime putting the cake in the oven and count out loud together to the suggested number of minutes. Next, take the cake out of the oven, mime putting candles on it and all sing the traditional ‘Happy birthday’ song. It’s a magic cake so tell the birthday child to “blow out your candles and make a wish!”
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday dear Child’s Name, Happy birthday to you.
21. GIVE THE BIRTHDAY CARD
Reveal the card from your sparkly bag, read it aloud, give it to the birthday child and lead everyone in giving them a round of applause.
22. BUBBLES: ‘September’ performed by Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick and Earth, Wind & Fire
Play the song and use your bubble machine to create lots of bubbles for the children to pop. You should dance as you do this.
23. PRIZES: ‘True Colours’ performed by Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick
Play the track and give each child some magic sparkles and a Haribo treat. Once you’ve packed up remember to ask the parents if you can put a party flyer in each of the party bags and if you can have a photo with the birthday child.
NB: If you did magic tricks during the food break (and therefore have already given out magic sparkles) there is no need to hand out magic sparkles again here. Just hand out the sweets.
