Up and down and up and down, This is the way to London town.
Suggestions for alternate verses:
Up and down and up and down, This is the way to Birmingham town.
...This is the way to Candy town. ...This is the way to Chocolate town.
...This is the way to Princess town...
Activities for public classes with parents/carers
1. Demonstrate the song with your small teddy, moving her/him up and down according to pitch and pulse.
2. The adults lift their babies up and down according to pitch and pulse.
3. The group sings the song and shows the pitch by moving the parachute up for the higher pitches and down for the lower pitches. "Let's send Teddy on an adventure." Repeat with the teddy on top. "Let's send Teddy somewhere new.” Suggest other places to send the teddy and adjust the lyrics accordingly.
Activities for ELCs and pre- schools
1. Same as for public classes with parents/carers.
2. Same as activity 3 for public classes with parents/carers.
1. You sing the song holding your hand at forehead level for the higher pitches and just above belly button for the lower pitches. Encourage the older toddlers to join in with the actions.
2. You suggest some alternative places to sing about, and the children choose one of the suggested places to sing about. You then sing the song replacing 'London' with the suggested place. Repeat several times.
3. The group sings the song and shows the pitch by moving the parachute up for the higher pitches and down for the lower pitches. "Let's send Teddy on an adventure." Repeat with the small teddy on top. "Where shall we send Teddy this time?" The children think up new places to send the teddy.
1. Tell the children you are going to sing them a song where you show the pitch with your hands. You sing the song holding your hand at forehead level for the higher pitches and just above belly button for the lower pitches.
2. You sing the song and the children join in with the actions.
3. The children sing the song and do the actions with you.
4. The children sing the song and do the actions without you.
5. Volunteers think up other places to sing about and everyone sings the song replacing 'London' with the suggested place.
6. A volunteer sings the song on their own (inserting the name of their chosen place) and the group copies immediately after, like an echo.
7. Same as for toddlers activity three.

Walkin' in the Rain
Walkin' in the rain,
Walkin' in the rain,
Look there's a puddle let's jump. Splash!
Walkin' in the rain,
Walkin' in the rain,
Look there's a puddle let's jump. Splash!
Activities for public classes with parents/carers
1. Reveal rain pic. "It's time to go splashing in some puddles!" The adults hold their babies and walk around the room in a circle to the pulse, jumping on the word ‘Splash!’
2. Walk slowly like “snails”. Walk quickly like “mice”.
3. Lightly creep to pulse and use “fairy” (quieter) voices. March loudly and use “giant” (louder) voices.
Activities for ELCs and pre-schools This song is not appropriate for baby classes without parents/carers. Perform activities for 'Sally Go 'Round the Sun' instead.
* You can choose between 'Walkin' in the Rain and 'Sally Go 'Round the Sun'. 'Walkin' in the Rain' works well when your toddlers are good walkers and/or when you have enthusiastic adults joining in and holding the children's hands as they walk.
1. Reveal rain pic. "It's time to go splashing in some puddles!" The children walk the pulse in a circle whilst singing. They stop on the word ‘jump’, then jump and land on the word ‘splash!’.
2. Walk slowly like “snails”. Walk quickly like “mice”.
3. Lightly creep to pulse and use “fairy” (quieter) voices. March loudly and use “giant” (louder) voices.
Activities 1 & 2 are the same as for toddlers. N.B. activity three is different from Term Three plans.
3. Walk the pulse and sing the song using “thinking voices”, only performing the ‘splash!’ out loud. You can begin to build this skill by mouthing the words without making any sound.
