Activities for public classes with parents/carers
1. Place your big teddy on your lap and bounce him/her up and down to the pulse as you sing the song. Slowly lift the teddy high in the air during ‘She/he can go so high’ and slowly lower the teddy back onto your lap during ‘She/he can almost touch the sky’. After ‘How many jumping beans have we?’, gently tap the teddy as you count ‘one’. Encourage the parents to join in as you repeat the song and actions once.
2. Going around the circle one at a time, the adults do the above actions with their babies as you sing the song and clap your hands to the pulse. Remember to replace ‘Teddy’ with the current Child’s Name. Encourage the other parents to clap along with you until it is their turn to bounce their baby on their lap. At the end of each repeat, count ‘How many jumping beans have we?’ by gesturing with a flat palm to each baby who has had a turn. So, after one baby has had a turn you will count ‘one’ and after three have had a turn you will count ‘one, two, three’ etc.
Repeat the song until all the babies have had a turn.
3. Once the adults understand the game, accompany on your melodic instrument.
Activities for ELCs and pre-schools
If your class has a high child/staff ratio then please do the activity as written in public classes with parents/carers. If your class doesn’t have a high staff/child ratio please do the following:
1. Hold the imaginary parachute and bounce it up and down to the pulse as you sing the song. Lift it up as high as you can slowly during ‘She/he can go so high’ and lower it slowly down to the ground during ‘She/he can almost touch the sky’.
2. Repeat with the real parachute.
3. Reveal your small teddy from your sparkly magic bag. “Teddy wants to be a jumping bean!”. Repeat the song and actions with the teddy on top of the parachute. After ‘How many jumping beans have we?’ count ‘one’ all together.
4. “I have some other friends who would like to become jumping beans!” One by one add a soft toy/finger puppet to the parachute to join the teddy. Make sure to change ‘Teddy’ to the name of the new toy (e.g. ‘Birdy is a jumping bean...’). Repeat until five toys are on top of the parachute, counting the number of beans out loud after each repeat.
              1. It’s time to become jumping beans!” Sing the song and do the following actions with the children: jump up and down for the first three lines. During ‘She/he can go so high’, slowly stretch your arms up high. During ‘She/he can almost touch the sky’, slowly curl up into a ball on the floor (this matches the pitch changes in the song rather than the words). Then, jump again during the final two lines. Repeat.
2. Get the children to sit in a circle by singing ‘Let’s make a circle’. Tell them they’re going to take turns being jumping beans. Choose the first child to be a jumping bean. They stand up and do the actions by themself (e.g. ‘Freya is a jumping bean’). Encourage the other children to sing and clap along. After ‘How many jumping beans have we?’, gesture with a flat palm to Freya and count: ‘one’. Ask the next child in the circle to stand up and join the first jumping bean. Sing the song again inserting the additional child’s name (e.g. ‘Alfie is a jumping bean’) and both the children do the actions together. After ‘How many jumping beans have we?’ count ‘one, two!’. Gesture towards each ‘jumping bean’ as you count them. Repeat until all the children are standing and jumping together.
NB: See ‘NB’ at end of pre- school activity column.
Activity 1 is same as for toddlers
2. Get the children to sit in a circle by singing ‘Let’s make a circle’. Tell them they’re going to take turns being jumping beans. Choose the first child to be a jumping bean. They go into the middle and do the actions by themself (e.g. ‘Freya is a jumping bean’). Encourage the other children to sing and clap along. After ‘How many jumping beans have we?’ gesture with a flat palm to Freya and count: ‘one’. Ask the next child in the circle to join the first in the middle of the circle. Sing the song again, inserting the next child’s name (e.g. ‘Alfie is a jumping bean’), and both the children do the actions together. After ‘How many jumping beans have we?’ count ‘one, two’. Gesture towards each ‘jumping bean’ as you count them. Repeat until all the children are jumping together.
NB: Stay seated and clap to encourage the other children to do the same while they wait for their turn to be jumping beans. If the adults in the room are doing this already, you can join in with your melodic instrument instead.
