Let's Make a Circle
See 'Welcome' songs
Sing the first verse of the song when you would like the children to make a circle. If you would like the group sitting, sing the song whilst you are standing and once everyone is holding hands in a circle you can sing 'Let's all sit down now' etc. or you can just sing 'sit down' as in the instruction below. It is much quicker and easier for children to make a circle standing than sitting. Do not spend long on this. The aim is to get the children into a circle as quickly as possible in order to keep the lesson flowing. Obviously, babies will not be able to hold hands and will need to be physically placed in a circle with the help of their parents or ELC staff.

Stand Up/Sit Down
Stand up Sit down
1. Sing these instructions every time you would like the class to stand up or sit down.
2. Sing the instructions with hand signals. Chest level for 'stand'/'sit', eye level for 'up' and waist level
for 'down'.
3. Pre-schoolers only: Try sometimes singing 'doo, doo' instead of the words and see if the children can recognise the instruction. Ask them how they knew what to do (because of the tune/because your voice went higher/lower).
4. Pre-schoolers only: If you have spare time in your class turn this into a game by singing the instructions several times, sometimes singing 'stand up', sometimes singing 'sit down' and sometimes repeating an instruction twice. Once they are good at this try the game with just 'doo doo' and the hand signals. Always end on 'sit down'. Ask the children again how they knew what to do.

Time to...
Time to hand out the instruments, The instruments, the instruments. Time to hand out the instruments, Early in the morning/in the afternoon.
Time to collect the instruments...
Sing this as you hand out and collect the percussion instruments. This will keep the class flowing and prevent the children from getting bored whilst waiting for their instruments. You can also use it for handing out scarves if you haven't had time to hand them out during listening time.

Ready
Ready
Version 1 Version 2
Make sure to sing 'ready' before you sing a song or say 'ready' before every rhyme, unless you are demonstrating a song or rhyme for the first time. This introduction should clearly indicate the pitch and/or tempo of the song or rhyme so the children know when to come in and at what note if it's a song. If the key is the same as the starting note, then it should be sung on the starting note (version 1). If the key is different to the starting note, then you can sing it on the starting note, or you can sing 'rea' on the key and 'dy' on the starting note (version 2).
