GENERAL
110 PILING SPECIFICATION
• Standard: Comply with the current edition of 'Specification for piling and
embedded retaining walls' (SPERW).
• Substitution of British Standard for SPERW requirements: None.
• References to Engineer in SPERW: For the purpose of this contract, interpret such
references as being to the person named in section A10 as administering the
contract on behalf of the Employer.
• Design working life category: 25 years.
130 PILES
• Standard: To SPERW, sections B2-B6, as appropriate to the pile type.
• Permitted types: Contractor's choice .
• Project specification: Submit proposals to cover the SPERW requirements in clause
B1.2 and listed under this heading for the chosen pile type.
• Other requirements: None .

220 DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION
• Requirement: Option 1 of SPERW, clause B1.4 applies.
• Standards used for design: To BS 8110 or BS EN 1992-1-1 for concrete piles and BS
5950-1 or BS EN 1993-5 for steel piles.
• Design features: site specific.
• Design suitability: Confirm acceptance of design as appropriate for the particular
ground conditions or submit alternative design proposals, accepting full
responsibility for them.
• Submission of information: As required by SPERW, table B1.1 and elsewhere, as
appropriate for the pile type, materials and tests specified.
- Amendments to requirements specified in SPERW for information required prior to
commencing construction of working piles:
- Confirmation that installation of piles will not damage adjacent structures/
services;
- Method of maintaining constant positive concrete pressure;
- Method of stabilizing excavations in event of delay in concreting; and
- Proposals for working close to existing façades.
222 EUROCODES
• National Annexes: Reference to a Eurocode shall be deemed to include the
appropriate United Kingdom National Annex, and nationally determined
parameters shall apply.
• Substitution of alternative design rules for Application Rules: Permitted when it can
be demonstrated that the alternative rule is in accordance with the relevant
principles and that structural safety, serviceability and durability of the resulting
structure will be at least that required by the Eurocode .
