Emergency Medicine Supply Services

Patients may often request an emergency supply directly or via an
Emergency Supply Service, such as NHS England’s Pharmacy First
Service, to access medicines when they have been unable to obtain
a prescription. Emergency supplies are not allowed for schedule 2 or 3
CDs but can be made for phenobarbital and schedule 4 and 5 CDs. The
maximum quantity that can be supplied is for five days’ treatment.
The network of CD Accountable Officers is aware that longer than
five days’ supplies of co-codamol and Z-drugs are being made by
pharmacies on a regular basis and have asked organisations to make
pharmacy teams aware of the legal maximum that can be supplied. It
is important to firstly assess the suitability of making a supply of these
drugs to the patient and then limiting any supply to a maximum of five
                                     days.
                                     Validity of owings

Patients with owings for Controlled Drugs need to be made aware that
there is a limited time that the remainders can be collected.

Schedule 2, 3 and 4 CDs: owings are valid for 28 days after the
                                     appropriate date on the prescription.

Schedule 5 CDs: owings are valid for six months from the appropriate
                                     date in the prescription.
                                     Repeats on veterinary prescriptions

Many animal owners are now obtaining prescriptions for treatments and
presenting them to pharmacies. Prescriptions for schedule 2 and 3 CDs
do not need to be on the standardised CD form, unlike prescriptions for
humans, but all other CD legal requirements do still apply. Vets often
use a preprinted form which contains options for repeats but schedule
2 and 3 CDs cannot be repeated. Pharmacy teams can dispense the
prescription once if legally and clinically appropriate but will need to
contact the vet to advise that no further supplies can be made.
