Preparing for winter health services

Although the winter months seem a long way off still, it is important that you
prepare for what is always a busy time in pharmacy. Looking beyond flu, there
are other winter health services that can present you with further opportunities,
additional income and increased footfall, with patients recognising that
community pharmacy is the key stone for treatment and advice.

Pneumococcal Vaccination Service

Pneumonia is a common respiratory disease which affects approximately
1% of adults in the UK annually.

While anyone can get pneumonia, only people of certain ages or with certain
medical conditions are eligible for a free NHS Pneumococcal vaccination, so
you could consider delivering a private pneumococcal vaccination service
as an accompaniment to the flu vaccination service during the autumn and
winter months.

If you run this service with a PGD you are authorised to administer:

• Pneumococcal polysaccharide • Pneumococcal polysaccharide
conjugate vaccine, 13-valent, conjugate vaccine, 20-valent,
absorbed (Prevenar® 13) absorbed (Apexxnar®)

• Pneumococcal polysaccharide
vaccine (Pneumovax® 23)
