Scotland: Established and effective

Since its launch in July 2020, NHS Pharmacy First Scotland has been
running smoothly. This service allows community pharmacies to provide
expert help for conditions like sore throats. It ensures people get the right
care in the right place, avoiding unnecessary trips to GP practices or local
Accident and Emergency Departments for non-urgent treatment.
              How reimbursement works

Pharmacies are reimbursed based on the number of activities—advice,
referral, or treatment—conducted by their teams, plus a base payment
for each pharmacy contractor. To qualify, pharmacies must perform at
least 100 interventions per month. Additionally, they will be reimbursed SCOTLAND
for items supplied from the Approved List, which will be published in Part
17 of the Scottish Drug Tariff.
              Private Services

For those seeking to run private services alongside Pharmacy First
Scotland, Numark offers a variety of resources on Numarknet. We’ve also
partnered with Pharmadoctor to provide practical tools like a Sore Throat
Patient Group Direction (PGD) and a Strep A Diagnostic Kit. Go over to
numarknet.com/test-and-treat to find out more on running this service.

              Wales: Detailed but rewarding

In Wales, sore throat services are part of the Common Ailments Service
(CAS), with funding based on patient registration bands. Here’s a quick
              breakdown:
              • Per consultation: £11.99 plus £2.47 for consumables. W
              • CAS Registration Fees: From £2,660.11 to £11,970.50 annually,
                  depending on patient numbers.
                                                                                                    W
In 2023, 66,877 consultations were completed, making it the third
most common consultation type. This is significant considering not all
pharmacies in Wales currently offer this service. As we transition out of
the summer months, the demand for sore throat consultations is likely to
increase. Now is an ideal time to consider running this service, particularly
as training has never been easier. Last year, training was only available ALES
face-to-face, but it is now accessible online. Training can be accessed
through health education and improvement Wales and it’s free to access
for professionals in Wales. Visit ytydysgu.heiw.wales to access this
              today.
Furthermore, if a patient isn’t registered, adding them to your list
can secure up to 12 months of registration fees. Online training and
reinstated swabbing make this service even more accessible.
