Hiring Manager Guide to Induction

Induction is the process for welcoming newly recruited colleagues and supporting them
to adjust to their new roles and working environments.
The Rowlands Retail Induction Programme has been designed to support new starters to
perform their role safely and successfully, as well as enabling them to clearly understand
what is expected in terms of their performance.
This guide aims to support you, as the People Leader, through the induction process and
to provide a general framework on which to base planning, implementation and review.
Over the next few weeks, the new starter is likely to receive a considerable amount of
information and meet several different people. The Induction Programme is designed
to help them by outlining the main elements within their induction period as well as
explaining their role in it. It outlines what should take place in their induction. It also
explains how induction links to the probationary period.

        7-week Induction Programme*

Over the next 7 weeks you will be guided through all the necessary main activities that
are required as part of your new colleague’s induction. Each week there will be a checklist
of key tasks to complete that week. The checklists are not meant to be exhaustive
and may need to be amended to reflect on your own or the Company’s requirements.
Although many of the elements focus on the specific requirements of their role, some will
help them to develop an understanding of the Company as a whole.
Ultimately the Induction Program should help to create a positive and supportive
working environment by allowing the new colleague to settle into the Company and their
Pharmacy and learn the key elements of the job within a reasonable timescale.
*Delivery Driver induction will take place during their first week of their employment.

        Who is Responsible for Induction?

The main responsibility for induction falls to the following colleagues:

        • Line manager - to manage the process
        • New starter - to engage with the process.

It is a good idea to appoint an induction ‘buddy’ who is not the line manager but a
colleague who can informally help a new starter settle in.
This is someone who can be approached to explain general or day to day things or
simply of whom to ask the ‘silly questions’. Careful consideration should be given as to
who the best person in the team to do this is and to allow them the time to carry this out.
