Q: I have received a prescription for an item written generically and the
doctor has written in the dosage instructions asking to supply a particular
manufacturer. Do I have to supply this one and will I get paid for it if it is
listed above the basic Drug Tariff price?
A: In England and Wales
This depends on if the prescription is a paper FP10 or prescribed via EPS
Paper FP10 prescriptions- you will be paid for the specified brand or
manufacturer if it is included in the main body of the prescription as long
as the brand is listed in the Dictionary of Medicines and Devices (dmd+d). If
not included in the dm+d you will need to endorse the prescription with the
manufacturer, pack size and list price.
The prescription can then be submitted in the normal way if it is included in or
beneath the top line near the name of the generic. If the manufacturer/brand is
specified in the dosage instructions, the prescription should be filed in the red
separator so it may be checked by a manual
handler at the NHSBSA.
EPS prescriptions – the brand/
manufacturer needs to be specified in the
product field on the EPS system for it to
be processed and payment is made based
on this information. If it is anywhere else
within the prescription it will be ignored
by the NHSBSA. Please note only products
listed in the Dictionary of Medicines and
Devices (dm+d) will appear on EPS scripts
